The Challenge
Our own company – The Moving Company, the premier brand and marketing consultancy in Philadelphia – needed to expand its physical offices to accommodate additional designers, content specialists and digital marketing professionals. This, only two years after first establishing our new headquarters in Manayunk, relocating from Conshohocken.
The opportunity existed for us to take over the remaining space that was left behind as our office space was carved out of a space three times what we required two years previously. The catch: that left-over space was simply too large for the additional workstations needed. But, ironically, a 1,200 SF “concrete-block soundproof room” was also left behind in that space vacated by Philadelphia University. The special facility had been constructed specifically to contain the noise of machinery the school ran during the normal business day, in a space above which Drexel University Medicine welcomed patients. The answer to this oversized problem: do some very creative thinking, of course!

The Process
Start by considering how the “soundproof room” could be put to profitable use and, if we could come up with something, get our landlord, Dan Neducsin, onboard to assist in the endeavor. (Dan was thrilled with the prospect of not having to tear out the room, a construction project into which he had invested nearly a quarter million dollars just ten years before.)
“Manayunk Studios” was Adam Muhlenhaupt’s brainchild and solution. The idea was to create distinct visual, audio and open spaces that could serve not only The Moving Company’s needs to fulfill client content – audio recording, videotaping, live streaming, and still photography – but, more importantly, become a valuable resource for artists as well as companies like ours with similar needs across the Philly region and beyond in order to become a profit center for our consultancy.

Problem Solved
The “MNYK Studios” brand was born, the space layout artfully crafted to include the three, distinct studio areas -- complete with catering galley and green room (with a shower) for talent to dress and makeup. The audio studio (that 1,200 SF concrete-block room) was transformed into three, state-of-the-art, fully isolated spaces: control room, doubling as additional sound space, live room for the band and a spacious lounge where vocals can be fully, separately controlled and where podcasts can accommodate as many participants as needed.
The Moving Company got the office expansion space we needed and all the very best capabilities for client content creation. Studios clients got all-new and comprehensive resources right here in Philly, actually even better, on ground level, in convenient Manayunk.
